While most people think of the Dog Days of Summer as the hot and steamy time of the year when life slows down and people go on vacation, those of us in the college admissions business see it as a time of renewed energy and excitement. Each year, the Common Application closes down at the end of July and officially re-launches for the new application season on August 1st. Our rising seniors (we take away the adjective “rising” and officially call you seniors now… ) are diligently working on their personal statements and “shaping their story” deciding exactly what they want colleges to know about them.
For the Class of 2022, we’ll help our students focus on showing colleges what matters most to them and highlighting who they are as learners and people who will contribute to the greater good of our society. Ann is a member of the Character Collaborative, which is an organization that works to
promote an assessment of character as a driving force to be considered in the college admissions process. Many of the schools we are in contact with also believe that character is an important element in shaping their class of students and have specific ways to discern this in applicants. We emphasize showcasing character with our students throughout the entire admissions process and hope that, at the end of their time with us, our students leave with a great sense of who they are as people and what they want to contribute to their new college community.
So, as these “Dog Days” are upon us we sadly say goodbye to our students in the Class of 2021 and wish them well as they head off to their first year of college. We are also excited for our students from previous classes as they return to campus in the fall and hopefully encounter a more normal and engaging school year ahead. Back at home, Rossbach & O’Connor feels exhilarated and invigorated as we tackle the upcoming application cycle with our students and look forward to celebrating all the accomplishments in the upcoming Class of 2022.
